Babies Really Do Like Bedtime Routine

February 19, 2007 | 1 Comment

I’ve never had a real set in stone routine for bedtime for my babies, but when they get older, I really see the benefits. Interestingly, a study by the Sleep Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Johnson’s Baby found that when 7 to 18 month olds follow a 30 minute wind down routine at night, they fall asleep 37% faster, sleep 23% longer and spend less time awake at night.

I guess it’s certainly worth it to develop a routine for your baby’s bedtime

Convention Offers Moms Much-Needed Training, Support

February 19, 2007 | Leave a Comment

The 2007 Successful Mothering Convention will offer moms a day of support, motivation, inspiration, laughter and education. The convention will be Feb. 24 at the newly rebuilt Murray High School in Salt Lake City. Classes begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

Prominent speakers like Don Aslett and Sandra Phillips, Dr. Jane Nelsen, Janet Penley, Dr. James Jones, and many more will cover more than 50 topics. The final event will be a keynote presentation from 4 to 5:30 p.m. by Dian Thomas. The event is sponsored by FM100 and KSL’s Studio Five.

Interested mothers can register at www.successfulmothering.org and receive a discount when registering with a friend. The price of registration, $45 for an individual mother and $40 when mothers come together, includes light breakfast, choice of five workshops, a hot lunch, a binder full of resources and a gift bag.

While mothering is a demanding and important profession, there is no formal training or standard set of qualifications to be a mom. As a result, mothers can struggle with feelings of inadequacy. “We’re inviting moms of all types, in every age and stage of life, to take a break from the daily doldrums and come synergize with other mothers,” said Regan Barnes, ChairMom of the Convention.

Proceeds go to YWCA of Salt Lake City and the Peace House, a refuge for victims of domestic violence. A scholarship fund makes this event accessible to all mothers regardless of their financial circumstances.

“Mothers will leave feeling lighter in the heart and brighter in the mind after this day of education and rejuvenation,” Barnes said.

This convention is combined with the Utah Mothers of Twins Club annual convention. Mothers of multiples should visit www.slmot.com for a special discount.

Why Do I Blog? Alice Asked

February 18, 2007 | 2 Comments

Well it took me long enough to answer, but my friend Alice Seba wanted to know why I blog. I had a good excuse - I was offline for awhile when my hard drive took a nosedive. But I’m back with a brand new computer and it needs a good tag to break it in!

I’m Opinionated
Yes, I’m a pretty opinionated person. That doesn’t mean I’m judgmental… but I’m not one to run from a good debate. My blog lets me share my opinions on what’s going on in the world.

I Always Wanted To Write
When I was a kid I dreamed of writing a book. I have written much more than that if you consider all the blog posts, website content, ebooks, articles and reports I’ve written. Self publishing is so much more fun than getting rejected by publishing houses. :)

To Get Audience
My blog gets people talking about my site which gets me more traffic, show listeners and subscribers.

So now it’s your turn to spill:

Is It A Bad Idea To Tell Your Kids They’re Smart or Pretty?

February 14, 2007 | 1 Comment

How do you feel about this? I’ve always felt that putting labels on children, even so called positive ones, was a bad idea. But, I have a difficult time not telling my daughters they’re pretty.

A recent article in New York magazine raises the question of whether it hampers a child in the long run when you tell them they’re smart. A quote:

“… a growing body of research—and a new study from the trenches of the New York public-school system—strongly suggests … Giving kids the label of “smart” does not prevent them from underperforming. It might actually be causing it.”

Evidently when kids are told they’re smart, they begin to underestimate the importance of effort and group activities into things they’re “good at” or “not good at”. In other words, they rely on talent as the primary thing instead of hard work - not a good thing in an adult, methinks.

It’s certainly an interesting read. I know that personally I find inappropriate and excessive praise to be insincere, annoying and manipulative (enter the parent who jumps up and down clapping “Good job!” when their tot goes down the slide at the playground… excuse me while I lose my latte.)

While I’m not usually a big one for editing what comes out of my mouth naturally (unless it’s negative of course), this really gives me pause.

What do you think?

Breastmilk - the other white milk

February 2, 2007 | 2 Comments

Well now I guess I might get a nasty letter from the Pork industry like my friend Jennifer aka The Lactivist did.

Apparently Jennifer has stepped on the pig people’s toes with her “The Other White Milk” breastfeeding advocacy tshirt. Read the whole story here: Pork people want to sue Lactivist

What are your thoughts? I try to stay away from pork anyway, but would seeing a shirt like this lower your opinion of the Pork industry?

What I really think is hilarious is their assertion that Jennifer is somehow insulting pork by using their slogan… as if breastfeeding were (yet again…) “dirty”.

Breastmilk is dirty and dead pig flesh isn’t. Hmm. Interesting.
