I vivdly recollect cross-nursed by at least three women. I was child no. 5 of my parents and then about three years old. I had not weaned by then. Mom had to be in hospital for the delivery of my younger brother. Although I had been having solids too, for comfort and at sleep time the aunt of my father (who was in her early forties) would nurse me several times. She used to take betels most of the time and always smelt of its odor. On another occasion when my Mom was sick, my cousin brother's wife, who was around 18-19, nursed me along with her few month's old baby - my niece. Later on, when I grew up, she would some time tease me by asking to nurse as she had milk for the several children who were regularly spaced. I was also cross-nursed by my Mom's slder sister on occasions when we went to her place.

I think wet-nursing is a great idea. I would do it and I would prefer someone to do it for me rather than give my baby a bottle.
All 4 of my babies have preferred my right breast. I think my left nipple is a bit wonky.

My right side is the big producer. I can't figure out why -- maybe something to do with how I preferred to hold one of the babies, or how I slept (co-slept and nursed)?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

@Tsoniki - great point - bottled fed babies can't feed themselves! Yes, it was hard giving her information on how to be away from her baby without losing her milk supply. I wanted to scream, "Take the baby with you!". I did suggest that she bring along a helper AND the baby so she could enjoy her vacation and along time with hubs but not disturb the breastfeeding relationship.

I think wet nursing is a wonderful gift! I'd do it in a heart beat!

Sheesh! (#5) I couldn't imagine leaving my baby at 3 weeks! Are you kidding me?!

My left breast is the "good " one, has been for all 3 of my girls.

Loved reading this!

I'm fairly sure I was cross or wet nursed too when I was a baby. I know we've talked about it (mom and I) but I don't remember. I honestly don't see the big deal! If it helps a woman to keep breastfeeding, go for it!

I'm dealing with number five right now. :( A friend is already talking about going out a few times before vacation in Dec so she is ready for their vacation. And she's really not liking breastfeeding because she has to hold the baby all day. You mean formula fed babies feed themselves? It's a tough situation.

My left was always preferred as well. And it is slightly larger. Interesting to see I'm not alone LOL

Hmmm...never really thought about which one was "better" - they are certainly different. I know I prefer using the left side because it frees up my right (more coordinated hand) to do things...yes, the life of a mother....always multi-tasking.

Interesting facts you share here.

Thanks Nell.

People are talking about the whole controversy over wet/cross nursing, and I can't help but think of this incident in my life. If it wasn't for my mom's friend, would I have gone hungry for two days?
