I was really pleased to find the formula too, and me and all the kids are taking it. I know how important it is for me to get these nutrients while pregnant so the baby develops healthy teeth in those little newborn gums, but it's so hard to do when plagued with sickness. This gives me peace of mind :)

Thanks so much for sharing - this couldn't have come at a better time. We just had our dentist check up and all teeth were looking good (cavity free) so far, but we need to keep at it and then some, for the long term. The formula above may just be the missing ingrediant for us.

My favorite is oat face scrub - Simply mix a small handful of oat flakes with warm water and let it soften/soak up first and then apply to wet face. Gently scrub in circular motion for 3-4 minutes and wash as usual. Leaves skin feeling very soft, clean and refreshed.

Great list Carrie!

Hi! Love your review as I too find Mother of Eden the best, but I can longer find them any where so have not been able to repurchase ( I bought my first few pads of theirs 7 years ago!) Do you know where I can buy them?

Kind regards,

Have you tried those cocoa roasted almonds??? They are my favorite! Avocado would be good too since it's high in good fats and oily...My favorite snack is turkey wrapped string cheese and an apple. Just remember, high protein could end up making you constipated so make sure you eat applesauce or apples during the day to help offset that horrible pain! Keep us updated! I'm so glad you felt the baby move. That's so exciting!!!

Yes, definitely. I've always not handled sugar very well (have the same ravenous, shaky feeling you describe when on a diet of carbs for a few hours) and pregnancy is no exception. I had my prenatal appointment today too and I found out I have to do the 2 hour GTT. :(

Definitely stick to the protein and also the good fats (like coconut, beef fats etc). I have been repelled by meat and fat during this pregnancy which is not helping the cause! My only reliable (read: edible) sources of protein are milk and eggs.

Hope you feel better soon and are able to eat more.

I've read that magnesium helps regulate blood sugar. I've always struggled with the same low blood sugar you mention... keeping magnesium gel rubbed into my hands and feet has made the glucose peaks and valleys less noticeable during pregnancy. Magnesium also helps regularity, dry skin, and prevents pre-eclampsia- some other prego problems.

Oh boy I never realize how much I do in a day. Your writing makes me realize what we do.

So far we made homemade waffles (the kids helped)
Read a story about a badger and a farmer
Philippians 2:13
Looked up badger in the encyclopedia
Went to Women's Bible Study
Went to the park for an hour behind the church
Came home, made lunch
Did some work-answered email wrote a post
They did some work.
Read a few stories
Nap time
Encouraging clean up,
Get library books together (due today!)

Thanks, that made me feel better.

I only shop new children's clothes for undershirts and socks. My toddler is about to potty-train, and we'll add undies to that list. Everything else is garage sale shopping or an occasional gift from friends or relatives. My infant garments are gender-neutral, and will be used for this next one due in a month, and all of their external garments will be either hand-me-downs, garage sales, or hand-made.

My day sounds very similar to yours, except I have 3 (one in public school too and two at home) and are 33 weeks pregnant. Your toddler sounds very much like mine (mine will be 3yo in a few weeks time). We are also still nursing -- How are you coping with the pain?

Just Heavenly Carrie!

I would change places with you in a minute if it was possible. I believe you'll look back on this post someday and wish you had it back!!

Can't go wrong with Tasha Tudor! We were to have tea, but she died before I could get to Vermont! Wonderful lady!!

I happen to know someone that would be happy to help with the garden.

AWESOME WRITING! Your son is right. You SHOULD write a book.

I make home-made yogurt as well. I like the crock pot method the best. But just want to add that since eating plain yogurt for 3 times a day for 3 months, I've lost 6 lbs without doing anything else. So it's a natural weight loss solution as well:)

Interesting comments Sharon, your daughter and mine have something in common. I have taken my daughter and her best friend to the parks at Universal before and had the same type of situation. Usually Becca (her bf) always wore shoes or sandals whenever she came over, the day we went to universal, she wore colorful socks with slip on shoes (slides). After we had been on Spiderman, the strap on one of Becca's slides broke where it attached to the shoe (not fixable), I guess they were not made well. I suggested we could find a store to buy her some shoes, but Becca said she'd take off the other slide and she could go in her socks. Well as a mother, I did not feel it was a good idea for Becca to walk around Universal all day in her socks, it would be impossible to get them clean as they could not be bleached and there were plenty of wet places up ahead of us, so I told her to take her socks off, until we could find a place that sells shoes she can go barefoot. Reluctantly she pulled them off and handed them to me to put in my backpack. Well when we arrived at the popeye ride, my daughter already had her shoes off and was stuffing them in the backpack and both went on the ride barefoot by themselves (I was left to keep the 'dry' things). The ride attendant did say something about their feet but let them on anyhow. After that, we went to ripsaw falls and then river adventure, the three wettest rides they have. After popeye I offered to buy Becca some crocs, but she said she would prefer to just go barefoot. So the girls spent the rest of the day walking around Universal in their barefeet. By the time we arrived at the car that night, the bottoms of both were black and dirty. As Becca was spending the night, that was nothing the bath could not fix. It seems normal at Universal later in the day for kids to be barefoot, we saw lots more as it got later. Hannah

I'll have to try this one day. I don't usually buy the "green" dishwashing liquids at the store, so I have quite a few of the ones from CVS for $.50 or so. But there haven't been many good sales, so I'll have to try this sooner than later.

My son plays by himself a lot, but now that he is 2, almost 2 1/2, he is wanting more interactive play with other people. At home, that is me. He is my first, so he doesn't have the luxury of siblings.

I have found that I have worked out a good daily routine. I do chores in the morning. He will usually play in whatever room I am in, particularly in the laundry basket. From 10-12, we get out of the house. Play dates, the store, whatever. This time for me to chat with adults and for him to play with other kids, or at least get to see different stores, is necessary for our sanity. I didn't have a car for a long time and living in empty suburbia (yes, all the moms work), was making me depressed. Now I can drive to visit other stay at home moms with little ones, and we go to the zoo and playground, etc.

The only hard time is when I'm making dinner. My son always wants me playing in the living room with him, or at least he likes having me in there. He doesn't like me in the kitchen. I don't have to play with him, he just wants me sitting on the floor near him playing.

I feel guilty a lot for not teaching him everything they teach in daycare (though I would never even think of sending him to one). When I pray about what to teach him, I always feel that I should teach him the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I guess that's the most important thing. Letting him know who he is and who God is will probably make him happier in the long run than counting to 30 or reading at this age.

Yes, I have a big stash. It first developed because my husband and I were about to adopt and a friend said her sister who was also adopting had to have everything ready for the child-- a crib, a toddler bed, everything. My husband was in grad school and all our money was going towards saving for the adoption, so I freaked out and got a ton of free clothes on craigslist, both for a boy and a girl as well as a crib and a ton of other baby stuff that I thought I would need for the home study. Turns out those things aren't required before you have the child placed with you. However, I held on to the stuff because we truly didn't have extra the money to buy much, and it became a way for me to cope with infertility and plan for a child.
My son is now 2, and I did appreciate not having to go shopping because I had a ton of super cute clothes already. However, I have culled down everything to my favorites, and now any time a friend gets pregnant, I invite her over to go through my stash (I still have tubs of girl clothes too). I honestly haven't thought about just donating them all, as we are preparing to adopt again. I guess I could. I have a great community here where I do not think I would want for clothes because people freely give away clothes their children have grown out of.

Comment on Raw Milk Yogurt in the Slow Cooker by Renee

This is my friend's version. It is quite good. She strains hers to make greek yogurt and saves the whey for baking. I would suggest straining or at least draining the whey if you want thicker yogurt. The liquidy whey is just part of the process. It's just how it turns out. If you let it sit a little longer, like a day, then you get a fabulous cream cheese type of consistency, which is great for a spread!

2. you do NOT need to heat the milk. this is the joy of this method and what makes it so very easy!
3. set your oven to 350 while you whisk in a scoop (maybe 2 or 3 T) of plain yogurt. I like to buy a little $1 greek yogurt container, you can use whatever you want depending on what cultures you want/like. After this batch is done, just scoop up some of your homemade to start the next batch. I can keep it going for a couple months, at least, making yogurt about every 6 - 8 days.
4. turn off your oven. it's not 350 yet, you just want to take the chill off. turn ON your oven light. The light, believe it or not, will keep the oven at around 100 which is just right for yogurt. cover your milk mix with aluminum foil. put it in the oven with the light on and WALK AWAY. Do not open, jiggle stir, investigate. I usually do this after dinner or before bed or in the morning and leave it alone all day. Remember, this stuff was made in sacs hanging from camels traveling the desert; you can't hurt it by going too long;) [The goal is about 100degrees. I did use my probe thermometer at first to make sure my oven would hold to this temp]
5. after about 10 hours, take the bowl out and admire all that whey floating on top. You did it!
6. That whey is full of calcium and has about 20% of the protein of the yogurt too (lots of debate on that, I went with what I found in dairy/yogurt textbooks). The bacteria ate all the carbs up, too and turned them into tangy goodness. You probably know all that already:) . If you want, stir the whey in and enjoy gloopy yogurt. I don't like that so much:) I save the whey and use it for liquid in bread baking. you can use it in anything you bake, really, as a water substitute. So I strain it the EASY WAY. Line you handy dandy generic pasta colander with a flat cloth diaper--not the prefold kind with a thick middle, but the flat birdseye kind (or 2 layers of bounty paper towels, but the diaper is much easier, and cheese cloth? BIG MESS. skip it!). Put colander over a pot or bowl it will not sink down into (I use by 4c liquid measuring cup). Pour the yogurt into the colander and let it hang out and drip. I usually let 2-3 cups whey drain out, depending on how thick I want it. It takes less than an hour. To speed it up, add a cup of water to a quart ziplock and throw it on top. it won't stick, and it will add weight to speed things along. Sometimes I run a rubber scraper along the diaper/paper towels liner to get the thick stuff off and keep things draining. If you want a sour cream or cream cheese substitute, stick it in the fridge and let 4 c drain (the max I've ever seen). When done draining, take the yogurt from the diaper and pour/scrape into a container for the fridge. This can feel awkward, but you'll get the hang of it. most of it pours off, and the rest comes off the diaper quite nicely with a rubber scraper. stir and enjoy! mix in anything you want when you serve.

Preheat oven to lowest temp then turn off.

Using a good amount of culture added to some raw milk in a stove top kettle, I whisk it quickly to disperse yogurt then add remaining milk. Whisking, I quickly bring the temp upto about 110.

Jar & cap and set in oven. If the house is chilly (wintertime) I may turn the oven on once more to the lowest setting, then immediately off again. Leaving the oven light on helps, too. 6 to 8 hours should do. I don't use a waterbath. I try to keep temps as low as possible to preserve the nutrients.

Remove slightly before the whey develops, while the side of the jar is still milky with a just barely discernable gel to the yogurt.

Do you set your slow cooker (crock pot) on Low. I saw a recipe like this before so I checked the temperature of my crock pot (same version as shown on the link) on Low and it reaches about 150 degrees (not exactly raw). I have not had success with all the raw recipes out there. So like you I figured what I was making would be better then store bought and went ahead and heated it. It resulted in a nice thick batch. Still wish I could find a way to make it thick and keep it raw. so if I am miss understanding please help and let me know. Thanks :)

Thank you for posting your raw milk version of this!
I am assuming, since the slow cooker his on low, you're not actually "cooking" the milk (and therefore pasteurizing it), right?

My son can eat yogurt but can't handle drinking anything except raw milk so this would be a GREAT way to save money and take another step at being more self-sufficient.

I have made yogurt in the oven this way: I first warm the oven. I place the jars of cultured milk in a large pan of warm water, then place it in the oven, and turn it off. This seems to keep the yogurt warm enough, but not too warm, as would be the case if it were left on, even at the lowest temperature, which on my oven is 140 degrees.

Sorry to hear you're unwell! :( I hope it passes through very quickly. At 32 weeks, I certainly don't miss the morning sickness.

Mothers are indeed a Godsend. They look after their babies and their babies' babies, all effortlessly! My mom is one of those stay at home mothers who were super organized and 'with it' all the time - I, on the other hand, are not. :) Everyday is disorganized and most of the time I like it that way, as it's quite relaxed. I'd be lying though, if I said it wasn't nice to have a dose of 'organized' air in the house every now and then. When mom's around, I wake up and the kids are already dressed, fed, hair plaited and all.. With dishes done to boot.

Dh often jokes that the only time our house is spotless is when my mom is here!

Oh no!!! I hope it doesn't make it's way through everyone. You are right about mother, what would be do without them!?! I, for one, would certainly still be in the fetal position with a screaming 1 week old baby...

Carrie,

Thanks for sharing. This is so interesting! We also do raw milk and I have been hesitant about making yoghurt with it. I don't have a slow cooker... However I do have the slow cooking function on my oven. Any idea on how I would be doing this without a slow cooker? Any help would be appreciated. :)

What might be underlying some of these questions is people's negative opinions about your decision to have so many children and the resulting impact on our world. Though I love children and could imagine birthing many more, I would never consider birthing more than two, and I consider any decision to do so to be selfish at the expense of our larger environment and world. Over-population is such a huge problem, which contributed to environmental destruction. And any child raised in the US consumed infinitely more resources than children born in poorer countries no matter how frugal the family. I can't imagine doing anymore than replacing myself and my husband in terms of the number of children we birth. Of course, adoption is an ethical way to have many more children.

Thank you for posting this! I am pregnant with my fifth and I am sooooo tired of the comments. We too believe that children are a blessing.

I actually think that it's easier now in a lot of ways than it was when we just had one or two kids. They entertain each other, for one thing. The older ones are able to be very helpful with housework and many hands make light work. If I need to toss in a load of laundry, there's almost always someone around who can keep an eye on the youngest for a few minutes. The baby is a people watcher and his siblings love having an audience for their songs, plays and dances as much as he loves watching them.

Hi Carrie!

I've come over from Miss Minimalist as well. It was very inspiring to read about a large family practising minimalism. I have three children and am about to have my fourth! I love children and big families and I wouldn't trade it for a 'simpler' existence (even though it's quite possible to have a minimalist lifestyle as you've proven). I would say I am an aspiring minimalist - Not quite there but I certainly have the motivation. I too, have always been inclined towards minimalism. We must have been separated at birth as I also dislike shopping (especially for leisure).

I'm going to add your blog to my favourites list :)

Thanks for sharing your story -- Looking forward to hearing more!

Are you still eating beans every day, and if so, do you think they are helping at all? I went to Karen Hurd's website after reading your post about the beans, and I'm doing her gallbladder cleanse protocol which is 6-8 weeks of 6 servings of beans a day, similar to the morning sickness cure.

I'm really hoping that doing this now, and eating lots of beans in the next pregnancy will nip my morning sickness.

I have six kids and I get the "you must be supermom" comment a lot. Surprisingly I have only gotten the negative birth control comments a handful of times, and most of those were when I only had four kids.

My husband says it's because I give people the evil eyebrow as soon as they comment on our family size.

Hello!
I came to your blog from a link on Miss Minimalist. I've been hoping to read posts by a minimalist homeschooling mom of six or seven. I've been trying to get "totally organized" since 1998. I first heard about minimalism at the end of 2009. I'm a homeschooling mom with six kids on a simplifying journey. I let go of my 2 blogs in 2010, had some aspiring minimalist book sales this past summer, also ditched the What Your__ Grader Needs to Know books (and posted about it) and I've been wanting to let go of the basement clothing stash. I doubt my dh will let me because it does save us money, but I found your post inspiring. I look forward to reading more, but gotta go cook dinner.

Hi, I found your blog via Miss Minimalist and love it! One thing though that you might not be considering when people are making these assumptions is what kind of children they have or have been around. Not all kids are created equal as far as temperament is concerned, and perhaps you've been blessed with more pleasant temperaments in your family. I parent my 2 boys the same way, yet they are polar opposites. one is an absolute darling and I'd gladly have 5 more kids if I knew that's what all children were like. My other son is described as many things such as strong-willed, agressive/defiant, adhd, and no level of firm or loving parenting makes a difference, it is just who he is. He requires 24/7 supervision within arm's reach or else people get hurt, and the thought of six more of the same to care for is just not humanly possible and is downright unsafe. six more of my other child would be absolutely heavenly.
just something to consider; maybe their image of six children is different than who your six children are.

Thanks so much for the info! You can actually get LOTS of protein from plants (and your body uses them better). Not that I'm trying to push you veg or vegan, just saying :)
I've been nursing my baby for 11 months and I wanted to juice only for a few days to get going on my vegetarian switch (for health and for endometriosis) I was worried about it but you've relaxed me! Thanks!

Found you blog and love it. We too have 6 children. People started asking us strange questions when I was pregnant with our 4th who happened to be born with Down syndrome. We adopted #5, a darling baby boy with Down syndrome, and people thought we had lost our mind. Four years later when I was 49 and hubby 55 we adopted#6 and you guessed it ....another baby with Down syndrome. People finally shut up because they thought we had lost our minds! That was 14 years ago and we are all doing great. It is so much fun having a big family. Oh yes, hubby lost his job at 63 and we had some lean years but we did just fine. Congratulations on baby#7. What a joy that darling child will bring.

I think your blog and podcast are really awesome. More mom's like yourself need to come forward and share your story and your family's tips on staying financially sound and providing for children. Our society is set up to make it near impossible to raise children, and at least 60% of that is attitude. Although I am a pro-choice feminist, I believe that if the choice to terminate is made because a mother cannot, or does not believe that she can raise her child due to finances or support is such a terrible tragedy. There needs to be more awareness of alternative ways to raise families without breaking the bank.

Although I am a pro-choice feminist, I believe that if the choice to terminate is made because a mother cannot, or does not believe that she can raise her child due to finances or support is such a terrible tragedy. There needs to be more awareness of alternative ways to raise families without breaking the bank.
