Are you familiar with Melissa and Doug toys? They are an awesome line of high quality wooden toys. You can read reviews of some of these toys here:
At the moment, Amazon has their selection of some of the bestselling Melissa and Doug Toys on Sale
Weren’t we just talking about avoiding junky cheap plastic toys? Some great comments in that thread!

Have you gotten any Melissa and Doug toys lately? The quality has gone down significantly in the last 7 years. We have a wooden train from 2002 and just received one in the last few months. The new one is made with lower quality wood and a number of the posts have fallen out. And the colored shapes you put on the top are made with a compressed cardboard/chip board material. Not what I call quality….and still made in China.
There are many small manufacturers in the U.S. (and Europe) that make high quality, wooden or natural material toys. My husband and kids made a bunch of oak wood blocks for our youngest just last December. He loves them. And I don’t worry about them killing him.
Just my two cents.
Thanks Kristin for sharing your thoughts. I have purchased Melissa and Doug toys, several months ago. They seemed very high quality to me. Perhaps they differ depending on the product?
Great suggestions though
