Mommy Guilt and Taking Breaks

Today on Mom’s Morning Show, life coach Aurelia Williams came on to talk about mommy taking time for herself. Do you struggle with this? Do you feel guilty about taking time to get a pedicure, or to exercise, read a book, or any other of a number of ways you can refresh yourself?

I don’t think I do. For me, the biggest issue is finding the right time to get these things done. So it’s a matter of scheduling and child care, primarily. I know that I am a better Mom when I take a little time to chill out. It could be as simple as sitting down to a nice hot cup of tea in the middle of the day when the kids are otherwise occupied or napping. Or it could be taking off to Barnes and Noble to browse books or work on the laptop. (And even though I’m working, it’s refreshing still.)

I think that NOT taking time to get a break from the responsibilities of mommyhood can lead to burnout. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve seen moms become depressed and ill or even suffer mental breakdowns because of doing too much and trying to be supermom.

If I don’t care for myself, I can’t care for others very well. What do you think?
