@Jill - I definately agree with your assessment.

@Jennifer - thanks, I will check that out - from the library of course since I can't buy the book this month. ;)

@Rachel - thanks!

@Tiffany - well as long as they're purchased through my amazon link, that's ok. ;)

This is a great exercise, even if just to show kids that you CAN have fun without spending. It's amazing how young they can be when they start to pick up on our culture's spending addiction.
And, since undergoing a major financial crisis last year, we've been on a spending lockdown, it's amazing what we've learned to do without.

The great news is that our general quality of life hasn't changed. The stuff that really matters is still free, like good friends, quality, organic, local food (certainly not free, but when you make it a priority, all things fall into place somehow) and peaceful, (as peaceful as it gets with a toddler!) meaningful time together.

hmm. Considering I just sat down with myself and had the whole "Where is it all going and why is it such a HIGH number", this title struck a chord..

Even removing food, bills (to include rent), and gas, there is still babysitter (not so I can go out for entertainment, but so I can work), camp, cleaning help (ok sounds spoiled, but its a necessity for sanity), gifts - have 3 big parties this month, back to school books, uniforms (if outgrown).

You know what.. just writing this makes me realize that the bulk of my expenses are in the 'allowed' sections and I have to figure out a way to reduce those. They are just out of control lately!!

Carrie, I think this is a fantastic way to do a No Spend Month. $10 a week is a great goal! I had to learn how to make my own iced coffee during mine, but now I actually prefer it to Starbucks. Your site is wonderful and I look forward to reading more.

I love this idea! My DH just left for two weeks and I bet I could get through the 2 weeks on my own - no way I could count him in on it. LOL Maybe I'll do September so he can be in on it too.

I've done this before but with a slightly different angle. I said that I couldn't buy it unless I could buy it at a Grocery Store (and I don't mean those super stores, either). So, basically, food, paper products, and health & beauty stuff. lol. Caveats were gas & medical.

I made it over a month and our finances reflected it.

I may just join you. :)
