A lot of people are making resolutions this time of year. I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions (partly because I don’t celebrate the holiday), but I do set goals for myself on an ongoing basis, including my parenting.
Do you set goals with yourself when it comes to your kids?
Right now I’m really working on my voice… lately I’ve been giving a lot of thought and focused attention on how the words come out of my mouth. I ask myself, if I said this to anyone else, would they be bothered by my words or my tone? Would I want my child to speak to me this way? Would I speak to a dear friend like this?
I’ve found that I’m not always as kind as I wish, and my tone doesn’t always reflect how I truly feel inside. For instance, if I need cooperation, I don’t want my voice to sound too cutesy or wishy washy, but I don’t want to sound mean either. I want to make sure that my words are calm and loving and yet clear and resolved where necessary.
What are your parenting goals? Here’s what some other natural mommas are aiming for:
~ Get some exercise (Breastfeeding123.com)
~ Plan ahead for quality family and couple time (BreastfeedingMums Blog)
~ Work on manageable goals (drink more water, volunteer, not overextend) (The Lactivist)
~ Get organized (Mama Knows Breast)
~ Do at least three things to support breastfeeding (Motherwear Breastfeeding Blog)
~ Consider what’s best for your child first (Momma’s Angel)

Got something to say?

What a great goal to have Carrie
My goal is to listen more. And really hear what my kids are really saying. I find myself so busy doing stuff that I’m really not listening.
What an interesting goal. It’s not only useful with parenting but with all interactions. I have sometimes listened to my voice when I left someone a voice mail or heard it recorded and cringed. Is that really what I sound like? I can’t believe how many pauses and filler words I use. It is not how I envisioned myself to sound and is not how I intend to project myself. But I hadn’t considered how I must sound to my family.
I followed the link from the motherwear blog carnival.

[...] This is the first time I’ve participated in Motherwear’s Carnival of Breastfeeding. I was encouraged to share my goal for the upcoming year, which I did here. Here is what the other bloggers had to say: [...]
[...] I hope I remember to think more often, “How would I handle this if I couldn’t speak?” I think it would really help me with that parenting goal I set. [...]
My goal/wish is to become Work at Home Mom. So I could have more time for my kids.
I set some New Year Goals on my blog, but I think the main one is like you said my voice. I do need to listen to my kids more and wait before I start spewing out the mouth as I call it LOL!
They are real people and have real feelings and just because mommy is having a bad day, doesn’t mean that I need to take it out on them. I’m working on that!
