What is the best baby sling to use? A lot of that depends on your personal preferences, as well as things like:
Where and when you’re going to use the sling
The age and weight of your baby
Your local climate
I tried the padded sling styles (NoJo, Over the Shoulder Baby Holder) for awhile but found them too bulky, like wearing a pillow around my torso. The padded ring also slings make it too hard to get baby really close to you because you can’t pull the tail far enough through the rings to get a hands free breastfeeding hold or a snug hold with a newborn if you’re petite. Plus it’s hot! (Imagine wearing a comforter around you all summer in Georgia.)
In my opinion the best baby sling is an unpadded ring sling like the Maya Wrap. I’ve had two worn threadbare so far.
The Maya Wrap is in my opinion the best all around baby sling. It’s super easy and fast to just slip on. It’s cool and breathable. It’s almost infinitely adjustable. You can also adjust the top and bottom “rails” of the sling independently which is great when your child falls asleep and you need to pull their head in close to your body so it doesn’t flop around (impossible to do with the padded styles).
I also like the Moby Wrap for longer wearing…like if I’m taking the kids to a museum or something. It’s not a sling but more of a looong strip of cloth you tie on. It’s more comfortable for long term wearing but since it can’t be adjusted as easily, I use it around the house (when I can lay baby down to tie the sling on) or for longer periods out of the house.
Pouch slings are easy to slip on and off and tuck into a diaper bag or purse more easily than other styles, but you might find that a smaller baby flops around a bit too much in them. They’re great for older babies and toddlers though.
