How To Prevent Mommy Stress and Burnout

As moms, we know that we have a bad habit of spending all of our time taking care of everyone else and too little time taking care of ourselves.  Here are a few tips to help make you a healthier, happy mom before you burnout.

  1. Do not try to do it all alone. It’s a modern mom’s dilemma - most moms feel that they must accomplish everything and accomplish it all by themselves.  This is just not true, you can ask for help and you should. If you feel stressed and exhausted, you can’t be the mom you want to be.
  2. Do not be too hard on yourself. Again, you cannot do everything - there is only so much time in a day and you have only so much energy. So decide what activities are most important to you and what things you cannot put off, and do those things first. If the other things do not get accomplished, do not stress over it.  You have to learn to let go.
  3. Take time for yourself. This one cannot be said too much. You must take some time out for mom in order to truly be the best mom that you can be.  This can be just an hour a day while the kids enjoy some quiet time, or a whole day once or twice a month if you can manage it. Be sure to schedule time for your physical health too. Eat your veggies and lots of protein, limit caffeine, exercise at least 3 times a week, and put your feet up and rest at least once a day.
  4. Forget perfect. Forget the fairy tale image of what being a perfect mom looks like in your head.  You will never be that way, because let’s face it we cannot be perfect, so stop trying and start living. Your kids love you, warts and all.

Putting into practice these tips can help you to prevent mommy burnout and stress before it gets the best of you!
