Natural Moms Podcast #85

June 16, 2008

This week my guest is Stacey Rubin, IBCLC, author of The ABCs of Breastfeeding: Everything a Mom Needs to Know for a Happy Nursing Experience

Stacey has written a fantastic book on breastfeeding. For one, it has an unusual focus in that it encourages women to have a positive attitude about breastfeeding before their babies are born. Instead of listening to listening to horror stories from women whose experience with nursing was less than satisfying, Stacey suggests moms be confident and even practice positive visualization.

The book also outlines how to find a breastfeeding friendly physician, how to avoid common problems, how to find breastfeeding allies and how formula manufacturers undermine a mother’s confidence.

This book is a wonderful read for pregnant moms – I gave my copy to a friend at her baby shower. Read more reviews of this book here: The ABCs of Breastfeeding

More notes from the show:

When working with moms Stacey noticed all the negative talk from moms about breastfeeding. Whether it’s things they’ve read in the media or heard from others like relatives and friends.

Recognize that there are fears, questions and negative feelings about breastfeeding, a mom can change that to a positive affirmation. Affirmations work and breastfeeding is influenced by the emotions.

Formula marketing undermines a woman’s confidence and ability to breastfeed. Formula companies spend millions of dollars on market research.

Barring food allergy or intolerance, nursing moms do not need to restrict their diet needlessly. Babies start tasting the various flavors of mom’s diet in utero through the amniotic fluid. Then they experience these flavors in her milk too.

Babies experience gas and fussy periods at times – it’s not usually something mom ate.

Some discomfort when a mom starts nursing can be normal – but the pain should not get worse. If you see some trauma on the nipple or breast, seek some advice from a qualified person.
