Recyling and Pest Control

Ugh.

The all natural creepy crawly critters are loving my efforts to have a more eco-friendly home.

The cans, bottles (even when well rinsed), cardboard boxes and plastic containers provide everything they need: tiny bits of food provide endless nourishment (especially for roaches who only have to eat once every few weeks!), moisture for their hydration, and dark nooks and crannies are perfect hiding places.

When my kitchen started being taken over by bugs again, I had to throw out all the recycling… with the trash.

Overnight the bug population dwindled.

Major eco-guilt. :-(

How do you keep your recycling area from being the ideal home for unwanted guests?

Do share.

Roaches…oh no! We don’t have a problem with them here in Quito, unless you have a very dirty house, which is not the case ;)

When I lived in Japan they used to come inside the house for the summer once in a while. I really dislike them, so I put a nonecofriendly anti roaches on the entrance. Ggood that in Japan the entrance is lower than the rest of the house.

What if you hang them on a net , if they´re not too many items?. I don’t have a large family so we never get too much recyclables.

…unless you have flying roaches. In that case, I think I’d move to another town ;)

I was just remarking to my DH the other day about how we haven’t had any roaches in our house (been here a bit over 3 yrs). We both had roaches in our previous homes several miles south of where we are now.

I conjectured that perhaps b/c we live in a nicer neighborhood, more people use (chemical) pest control, and was thinking that a lack of bugs might *not* be such a good thing after all…

Then again, we have plenty of fire ants and chiggers in our backyard. *Sigh.*

Honestly, roaches do not bother me. Some times I find them dead in the house and I feed them to my hamster. What bothers me are flies. I would suggest for recycling to put them in any container with a good lid. That should keep away most buggies.

Got something to say?
